چکیده

ABSTRACT: We describe an outbreak of leishmaniasis in seven guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) which nodular ulcerated skin lesions varying sizes were observed the nasal cavity, upper lip, pinnae, vulva, and periarticular region limbs. Cytologic exam collected samples auricle one animals revealed macrophages containing parasitophorous vacuoles approximately 4.0μm diameter their cytoplasm with morphology suggestive Leishmania sp. Although spontaneously regressed two Guinea pigs, only survived. All six that died necropsied. Grossly, all showed bloody cutaneous crusts. One had distended dark red firm lungs. Histopathology histiocytic interstitial acanthotic dermatitis associated a myriad organisms within cytoplasm. In lung, characteristic broncho-interstitial pneumonia focal infiltrates neutrophils, epithelioid macrophages, multinucleated giant cells 2µm basophilic amastigotes compatible spp. A granulomatous lesion ,associated causal agent lung is novel description caused by L. enriettii. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique mini-exon primer performed from affected was positive equal to reference strain, identifying cytological, macroscopic, histological PCR allowed diagnosis identification specie

Typhlitis caused by intestinal Serpulina-like bacteria in domestic guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

Between January 1992 and December 1996, Serpulina-like bacteria were demonstrated in intestinal tract lesions from 37 of 88 guinea pigs submitted to the University of Ghent in Ghent, Belgium, for necropsy because of disease and death from different unknown causes. All infected animals had a history of sudden death with minimal introductory clinical signs. Occasionally, they produced yellow, sli...

Serum thyroxine concentrations in clinically healthy pet guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

BACKGROUND Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are often presented as patients in veterinary practice. Nevertheless, only limited information is available about endocrine diseases or thyroxine reference values for the species. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine serum thyroxine concentrations in a well-defined population of clinically healthy pet guinea pigs. METHODS Between October ...

Female novelty and the courtship behavior of male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus).

In several rodent species, an increase or recovery of sexual behavior can be observed when sexually satiated males are placed in contact with a novel mate. In order to assess the influence of female novelty on the courtship behavior of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), four adult males were observed during four daily 15-min sessions while interacting with the same pregnant female (same-female sess...

Immunoglobulin Genomics in the Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)

In science, the guinea pig is known as one of the gold standards for modeling human disease. It is especially important as a molecular and cellular biology model for studying the human immune system, as its immunological genes are more similar to human genes than are those of mice. The utility of the guinea pig as a model organism can be further enhanced by further characterization of the genes...

Form-deprivation myopia in the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)

Form deprivation (FD) was induced in 61 guinea pigs with a diffuser worn on one eye. The form-deprived eye elongated and developed myopia within 6 days in animals raised under a 12:12 h light/dark cycle, but not when reared in darkness. After 11 days of FD, the average eye was -6.6 D more myopic and 146 microm longer than its fellow eye. Initially the myopia was mostly from vitreous chamber elo...
